Phoenix is our next (and final!) stop on our Medela Recycles donation tour, and we have another amazing ambassador to help us spread the word about the program! Michelle Gardner shared with us why she thinks it’s important for moms to support each other and how she believes the Medela Recycles program makes this possible. Read on to learn what inspires Michelle to help other moms in need.
We are so grateful for your support of Medela Recycles. What inspired you to join us as a Medela Recycle Ambassador?
I love supporting other mothers and paying it forward, I think every mom should have the opportunity to breastfeed or provide breast milk for their baby. I love that Medela is donating breast pumps through Medela Recycles to the Ronald McDonald House to help support new moms.
What about Medela Recycles speaks to you?
When I heard that there was a recycling program, I was super excited. How often have I or my friends asked, “What do I do with my pump now that I am done?” No one wants to throw away perfectly good equipment. By recycling it and knowing that Medela in return is donating new breast pumps to other mothers who could benefit from it, I feel like I am contributing to the support team cheering on these moms. Medela is truly empowering these moms with the tools they need to have the opportunity to be successful in breastfeeding.
How does your role as a mother influence your work with Medela Recycles and RMHC?
I have worked with young children all my life, and now that I am pregnant with #4, I know that being a mom is a lot of work. It’s not just a physical battle, but it can be a mental and emotional battle too. Having support networks and programs to encourage moms to be able to do the things that they want, like breastfeeding, are invaluable to a mother’s physical, mental, and emotional health. It is so powerful to have someone saying, “If you want to do it, you can! We will help you. Here are the tools you need…” I feel that is what the Medela Recycles program and RMHC are doing not just for new moms, but for their families also.
Who is your biggest philanthropic influence, or role model, who you feel is actively changing the world for the better?
I feel that I am surrounded by many everyday role models who are changing the world by example and teaching their children to be better individuals. There are so many great moms in the world, and I think it is the small things we do that create the bigger ripples. When we work as a force in the same direction, we can make a difference.
Working with Medela as a Recycles Ambassador, what sort of legacy do you want to leave behind?
My hope is that by working as a Medela Recycles Ambassador, I am helping to empower women to be more confident with breastfeeding regardless of how their breastfeeding journey started.
Each pump recycled through the Medela Recycles program supports the donation of new hospital-grade breast pumps and breastfeeding supplies to Ronald McDonald House Charities. The goal is to provide moms with the same high-quality equipment they use at the hospital during their stay at a Ronald McDonald House.
