This month, we’re excited to continue our Medela Recycles donations with a visit to the Ronald McDonald House of Philadelphia with Medela Recycles Ambassador Heather Nash! Heather is a 36-year-old working mama to a three-year-old girl and a one-year-old boy. We’re honored to have her support as we spread the word about our new pump recycling program. Get to know Heather and learn more about how Medela Recycles enables moms who are at the end of their breastfeeding journey give back to families with babies in the NICU.
We are so grateful for your support of Medela Recycles. What inspired you to join us as a Medela Recycle Ambassador?
As a mother who pumped daily in the workplace for both of my children, I have affection for the Medela brand. My Medela pump allowed me to continue to feed my children even though I was separated from them when I returned to work. I am grateful to have been able to continue my breastfeeding relationship for over a year with both of my children. Medela rules!
What about Medela Recycles speaks to you?
Parting with your pump is bittersweet. For me it was saying goodbye to my baby and saying hello to my toddler. Moving on to that next phase can be hard emotionally. I like knowing that by recycling my pump, that “goodbye” is helping to create a new beginning for another mother and child. I can’t imagine what it must be like to have a child in NICU, but love that we can provide world-class equipment and resources to these parents and children.
How does your role as a mother influence your work with Medela Recycles and RMHC?
Mothers need to help other mothers. The support of other women can be crucial to your survival as a new mother. I can’t say how firmly that I believe this. I love that my partnership with Medela will have a positive impact on the lives of other mamas and babies. We need to support each other however we can.
Who is your biggest philanthropic influence, or role model, who you feel is actively changing the world for the better?
I think I am most inspired by everyday people who do big and small things to make the world a better, kinder place. When I hear stories about children who collect food and supplies for animal shelters in lieu of birthday gifts that makes my heart burst. Your contribution doesn’t have to be huge to make an impact.
Working with Medela as a Recycles Ambassador, what sort of legacy do you want to leave behind?
I want to spread the word and create as much awareness as possible for this fantastic program. I want every mom who pumps to know that their pump can be recycled easily and how this small act can make a big, big difference to another mom who is just starting her breastfeeding journey.
Heather lives with her children Marlo and Eddie and husband Tedford in South Philadelphia.
