Five Breastfeeding Tips to Increase Supply

How can I increase my breast milk supply? That always seems to be the most common question among breastfeeding moms. Well, we have great news! There’s many things you can try to help increase supply and ensure your baby is getting all the nutrition he or she needs. We’ll walk you though our top five tips to increase breast milk supply.

1) Increase Frequency
Pumping or breastfeeding frequently is one of the best ways to start increasing supply. A mother’s body is intended to respond to your baby’s feeding needs, so naturally if you pump or breastfeed more often, your body should begin producing more milk.

Many moms see a great response to adding an evening or early morning feeding or pumping session. We know it can be hard to maintain this schedule, but some moms suggest keeping the pump and a cooler by your bed.

2) Breastfeed then Pump
Sometimes your baby will stop feeding before you feel completely “empty,” so add a pumping session after your baby is finished feeding. This will help your body adjust to a greater feeding need and continue to produce more milk. Don’t worry if you only get a few additional ounces after a feeding. Remember, every ounce counts.

3) Take Care of Yourself
After having a baby, it’s easy to shift your focus entirely onto your baby, without continuing to take care of yourself. Keep in mind that eating a healthy diet and staying hydrated can positively affect your supply. Also, try to take time to relax. Make time for a warm bath, a quick nap, or a little bit of reading in a comfy chair. You deserve it! By taking care of yourself, you are taking care of your baby too.

4) Try Fenugreek
Fenugreek is a galactagogue
, or herb used to increase supply. Many moms have seen positive results by taking herbal supplements.  Consult with a lactation professional for additional information about taking one. If you want to give this a try, you can find fenugreek at your local health food store. Some moms have reported that they begin to smell like maple syrup after taking this supplement but don’t worry, this is completely normal.

5) Talk to A Lactation Consultant

    Healthy diet, plenty of water and fluids and healthy nursing tea are the ways, I increased my breast milk supply.
